The Top 5 Destinations That Just Feel Like Summer
If there’s one travel trend that completely took over this year, it’s the Euro Summer.
Everyone is dreaming about lazy afternoons by the sea, long lunches that turn into sunset dinners, and finding those little corners of Europe that feel like they’ve barely changed with time.
But beyond the trend, it got us thinking. There are some places that just feel like summer. Not because they’re the most popular or the most “Instagram-able,” but because there’s something about them that makes you instantly slow down. Long lunches, swimming whenever you feel like it, and evenings that last forever.
These are five destinations that capture everything summer travel should be – and, because we plan these trips for a living, a few honest words on how to actually experience each one.
The Athenian Riviera, Greece
Everyone talks about the Greek Islands, and for good reason. They’re beautiful. But if the Athenian Riviera isn’t already on your radar, it should be.
Less than an hour from Athens, this coastline feels genuinely glamorous. Think waterfront restaurants, beautiful hotels, beach clubs and hidden swimming spots that feel straight out of a film. It was once described as one of the most discreetly glamorous places on earth in its 1960s heyday, and that quiet glamour has discreetly returned.
Travellers consistently rave about the crystal-clear water, and our own clients come back saying the same. One who stayed earlier this year told us: “I would stay here forever. I don’t want to go back. The Riviera was a super plus and it’s a must!” A small local detail we always share: the water is at its clearest when a northerly wind is blowing – the kind of thing you only know from being there. What people love most is how easy it is to combine a city break with a beach holiday: a few days exploring Athens, then time on the Riviera, is one of Greece’s most underrated itineraries.
The Dolomites, Italy
Summer doesn’t always have to mean a beach.
The Italian Dolomites offer a completely different kind of escape. Fresh mountain air, turquoise lakes, and scenery that – believe it or not- looks even better in person. You’ll spend your days hiking, cycling, taking cable cars to incredible viewpoints, and relaxing with stunning mountain views.
The jewel everyone photographs is Lago di Braies, the “Emerald of the Dolomites,” with its famous wooden rowboats and an easy, mostly-flat 3.5km lakeside loop that suits all ages. But here’s where being in the know matters: visitors are increasingly honest that Braies has become a victim of its own fame. One traveller described a midweek August visit as feeling “more like a theme park designed for photo opportunities” than a calm alpine lake. The magic is still there – you simply have to know how to find it.
Our honest take: the trick is timing and choosing your lakes wisely. Arrive early or after 4pm when the access road opens up and the crowds die down, walk the full loop, and pair Braies with quieter alternatives like Lago di Misurina or Lago di Sorapis.
Sardinia, Italy
Sardinia deserves a place near the top of your summer wishlist if you’re craving crystal-clear water.
The beaches are spectacular, but it’s the gorgeous villages and slow pace of life that make this island so special. It has everything people love about Italy, with some of the most beautiful coastline in the Mediterranean – powder-soft sand, water in impossible shades of turquoise, and a rhythm that encourages you to do very little, very well.
Our honest take: Sardinia has gained in popularity but still has a way to go in terms of real infrastructure for luxury travelers. 2027 will be a big year for the island with Mandarin Oriental, Rosewood and Cheval Blanc all coming to raise the bar. Our team is keeping an eye on these special openings – advance booking will be essential!
The Maldives
Some destinations become classics for a reason, and the Maldives is one of them.
Mornings to swim, afternoons to snorkel and evenings to watch the sunset with your feet in the sand. There’s no pressure to fill every minute with activities. In fact, doing very little is exactly the point.
For honeymoons, milestone celebrations, or anyone simply needing to switch off, it’s hard to think of a destination that does it better.
Our honest take: every resort is its own private island, which means your entire trip is shaped by the one you choose – house-reef snorkeling straight from your overwater villa, the transfer type (seaplane versus speedboat changes everything), and whether the vibe is barefoot-luxury or family-friendly. There’s no “popping next door” if you get it wrong (except for one specific cluster of properties if you’re in the know). This is the single destination where who plans it matters most, because the resort is everything.
Okinawa, Japan
Japan probably isn’t the first country that comes to mind for a beach holiday, but Okinawa is a summer destination like no other.
Known for its crystal-clear water, incredible snorkelling and laid-back island atmosphere, it offers a side of Japan many travellers never expect. As one guide put it: it’s not Thailand, it’s not Hawaii, it’s not the Maldives – it’s Okinawa, and it feels distinctly, wonderfully Japanese. Beaches are clean and beautifully organised, often with marked swimming zones and jellyfish nets in season, while the waters draw snorkellers and divers hoping to spot manta rays, sea turtles and, between January and March, even migrating humpback whales.
The real beauty is the combination: tropical beaches with Japanese culture, fantastic local food, and a slower pace than Tokyo or Kyoto.
Summer Means Something Different to Everyone
For some, summer is beach glamour in Greece. For others, it’s hiking through the Dolomites.
The best summer holidays aren’t about following the latest trend. They’re about finding the destination that lets you slow down, stay a little longer, and enjoy every moment without watching the clock.
And often, the difference between a good trip and an unforgettable one isn’t the destination at all. It’s the small, local knowledge – the right beach (facing the right direction), the quiet lake, the resort that actually suits you, the island worth the extra flight. That’s the part we love most.
